Interest rates are at a 22-year high. Here’s what that means for your finances.

The Federal Reserve's historic rate hikes carry major implications for people's finances, experts said. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates to a 22-year high this week -- a milestone that carries major implications for the finances of everyday people, experts told ABC News. The move escalated an aggressive series of rate hikes that has helped dramatically reduce inflation from a peak last summer. But the historically high interest rates are bad news for borrowers, who will face even higher costs for things like car loans to credit card debt to mortgages. The high interest rates do deliver benefits for savers, however, who stand to gain from an uptick in the interest yielded by accounts held at banks as well as bonds and high-yield savings accounts. "It depends what side of the ledger you find yourself on," James Cox, a financial advisor and managing partner of Virginia-based Harris Financial Group, told ABC News. "If you're a saver and you have money i

California Gov. Gavin Newsom offers to help negotiate Hollywood strike

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has offered to help negotiate an end to the strikes that have hobbled Hollywood SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom has contacted all sides of the strike s that have hobbled Hollywood, his office said Wednesday, offering to help broker a deal to restart an industry that is crucial to keeping the state's economy humming amid signs of weakness. So far, neither studio executives nor actors and writers have shown formal interest in bringing Newsom to the negotiating table, said Anthony York, Newsom's senior advisor for communications. But York said both Newsom and senior members of his administration have been in touch with all sides as the two strike s stretch deeper into the summer blockbuster season. “It’s clear that the sides are still far apart, but he is deeply concerned about the impact a prolonged strike can have on the regional and state economy,” York said. He further noted “thousands of jobs depend directly or indirectly on Hol

UPS and Teamsters union reach agreement, avert strike

UPS and Teamsters faced a July 31 deadline. UPS and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a union representing about 330,000 UPS employees in the U.S., have reached a tentative collective bargaining agreement. Contract negotiations between UPS and the Teamsters restarted on Tuesday after breaking down earlier this month. The two sides faced a July 31 deadline, at which point the Teamsters had vowed to strike before employees' contract was set to expire on Aug. 1. Instead, UPS and the Teamsters struck a five-year tentative agreement that raises wages for all workers, creates additional full-time jobs and imposes dozens of workplace protections and improvements, the Teamsters said in a statement on Tuesday. MORE: What to know about the potential UPS Teamsters strike “Rank-and-file UPS Teamsters sacrificed everything to get this country through a pandemic and enabled UPS to reap record-setting profits," Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien said in a statement on Tuesday

World Superbike: Is Redding set for BMW reprieve after all?

Image
BMW’s decision to sign Yamaha star Razgatlioglu in May on a multi-year deal had left star signing Redding facing an uncertain future, as his contract with the German manufacturer expires at the end of the season. With his results having fallen short of expectations, and his constant criticism of the M1000RR bike having aggrieved the marque's top management, it had appeared that Redding would be left without a seat at BMW next year - with few other obvious options to stay in WSBK. But it turns out the British rider might not be out of BMW just yet, with developments at last weekend's Imola round suggesting he could extend his stay for a third consecutive season in 2024. While Redding’s two-year deal with BMW is set to come to an end, his contract includes an option for a one-year extension. Redding is understood to have enforced this option before it lapsed on July 15 and it now appears he will get to ride an M1000RR next year. The 30-year-old

Andrey Santos receives work permit ahead of new Chelsea season

Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos has qualified for a work permit to allow him to play in the Premier League, 90min understands. The 19-year-old joined from Vasco da Gama for a fee of around £18m in January but narrowly missed out on a work permit and returned to the Brazilian club on a six-month loan deal. Having since made his international debut for Brazil, Santos has officially qualified for a work permit and is free to represent Chelsea in the Premier League next season . Blues fans got a first glimpse of Santos in action during the 5-0 victory over Wrexham in pre- season , with the teenager impressing in Mauricio Pochettino's first unofficial Game for the club. Pochettino is keen to take a closer look at a number of his young midfielders before making a final decision on the make-up of his senior squad for next season, with Santos' permit now giving the 19-year-old more options for the coming campaign. Kawasaki decides against increasing rev limit of WSBK bike

Ahead of this weekend’s seventh round at Imola, Kawasaki was handed a 250rpm increase, the second time it has received a rev limit boost in the 2023 WSBK season. The Kawasaki ZX-10RR is now allowed to rev up to 15,100rpm, a jump from 14,600rpm at the start of the season. However, in a statement issued on Saturday morning at Imola, Kawasaki clarified that it will not be upgrading its bike as per the latest concession rules, suggesting that it will compete in the Italian round of the championship with the same rev limit with which it started the reason. The Japanese manufacturer said it is awaiting a third concessions bonus in order to introduce the parts it needs to increase the frequency at which its road-based engine revs in WSBK. It added that the set of items it requested from the FIM under concession rules are the same items that it was not allowed to introduce on its bike back in 2021 in a dispute over what constitutes a ‘redesigned engine’. Kawasaki had spent the winte
