Rhode Island Weather for August 31, 2023 – John Donnelly

Image
by John Donnelly, meteorologist High pressure pushes in from the northwest, keeping TS Idalia well to our south, with only some high cloud cover arcing in over the top during the day, eventually that will evaporate as well with the dry air taking hold. We’ll have a wonderfully dry but cloud-covered morning for the kiddos heading off to their first day of school, eventually clearing out by pickup time or shortly thereafter with a nice and light northwesterly breeze. Highs top out in the upper 70’s with evening lows in the dry upper 50’s. It’s an “A-” day! ___ Follow John’s weather forecasts, here: WEATHER WITH JOHN DONNELLY John Donnelly was born in Hialeah, Florida and moved back to Rhode Island and settled in Johnston, where he grew up until graduating from Lyndon State College in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology. As a child John always wanted to know how air moved, and he ran towards, not away from, thunder and lighting and variou

Anti-abortion group praises some candidates, criticizes others for GOP debate answers

Image
One of the most spirited debates on stage Wednesday was over abortion -- an issue that Republicans have struggled with electorally and in messaging in a post-Roe world Anti-abortion advocates blasted individual candidates including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley for refusing to commit to a national ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy -- a pledge taken by some of their competitors on stage. Vice President Mike Pence, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson called for a federal abortion ban after 15 weeks, a standard that leading anti-abortion groups like Susan B, Anthony Pro-Life America have been pushing for. "Mike Pence, Tim Scott and Asa Hutchinson each offered a clear, bold case for national protections for the unborn at least by 15 weeks, when they can feel pain, which aligns with the overwhelming consensus of Americans. Additionally, those who offered the clearest contrast pointed out the Democrats&

Rins’ injury absence extends to Barcelona MotoGP round

Image
The six-time MotoGP race winner badly broke his right leg in a crash during the sprint race at the Italian GP back in June. Rins underwent surgery on the leg but recovery has been slower than expected, with the main issue now the healing of the nerves in his foot. He has been out of action since that sprint race, missing the last five rounds. Ahead of this weekend’s Catalan GP at Barcelona, LCR Honda has announced that Rins will continue his recovery from the sidelines as HRC rider Iker Lecuona replaces again. Former Tech3 KTM rider Lecuona has been Rins’ stand-in since the Dutch GP at Assen, with the Honda World Superbike rider also com Pet ing in the British and Austrian GPs. Sixteenth in the sprint race at the Austrian GP is Lecuona’s best result on the Honda so far. A brief message from the LCR team read: "Iker Lecuona to replace Alex Rins at the Catalan GP. "LCR Honda Castrol rider Alex Rins is making solid progress to be on track

Why Martin Odegaard took Arsenal’s penalty against Crystal Palace instead of Bukayo Saka

Image
Arsenal have a reputation for penalty jiggery-pokery. Infamously, Robert Pires and Thierry Henry combined to take the worst spot kick in Premier League history against Manchester City in 2005, emphatically failing to recreate Johan Cruyff's iconic pass to an on-rushing teammate. The current team didn't attempt anything as audacious but did surprise fans - and their manager - when Martin Odegaard took the ball from regular taker Bukayo Saka against Crystal Palace on Monday night. Arsenal's skipper sent Sam Johnstone the wrong way to score the only goal of a nervy contest that raised a number of questions for the campaign going forward. Here's everything you need to know about Arsenal's penalty takers for the 2023/24 season. Why did Martin Odegaard take Arsenal’s penalty against Crystal Palace instead of Bukayo Saka? ARSENAL TAKE THE LEAD! ✅🔴 As cool as you like from Odegaard 😎 pic.twitter.com/pqdkmaNBnc — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 21, 2023 T
